Editorial Review
Fans of Star Wars: Episode I will recall with excitement the power and near-invincibility of the Destroyer Droid. With more than 500 pieces and fittings, this advanced LEGO kit has everything necessary to build that fearsome automaton. And with guns mounted almost everywhere, the firepower on these cyberfighters is enough to send even the courageous Jedi out looking for another job. Multiple connections, tubes, and fittings really help bring this model to life. Instructions for two different droids are included, but as with all LEGO kits, builders can use their creativity to adapt and change the figures they build. This kit has many small pieces and requires advanced building skills, so older children and experienced LEGO-builders will have the most success with it. May the parts be with you! --Lee Strucker

5 out of 5 stars Technic ADVANCED Star Wars Episode I: Destroyer Droid   June 18, 2002
This is a very complicated thing to make if you are younger than 11 (with an exception to those talented few). I love building things and it took me about 10 hours to build it. The problem was when i finished it wouldn't ball up very easily when i tried or it wouldn't unfold when it was supposed to when i finally did get it to ball up. Both of those could have been a problem with my building though. It is fun to build and when you get tired of it you can take it apart and use it for A LOT of spare parts on other technic models.

5 out of 5 stars TECHNIC Brings Out The Big Guns!   June 15, 2002

It's great to have a large scale Destroyer Droid with intricate design work put into it. This is definitely not for the real young kids as it has very small pieces and rubber bands. A model lover will of course love putting this one together. This Technic version faithfully brings out the best of the Destroyer Droid, one of the coolest robots to be seen on the screen in a long time. It is also a couple of hours worth of time in putting it together....but worth it when it is done. This is more a "trophy" piece then a toy because it can easily fall apart if mishandled. A great addition to any Star Wars collection.

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Most Ingenious Sets I've Seen Yet   December 29, 2001

My wife bought me this set for Christmas as my first set in the Star Wars theme. Normally, I'm a little hesitant to buy from the Technics Lego line because I've been disappointed in the past and I have to admit I probably wouldn't have purchased it on my own. After constructing the model, however, I have to admit I was more then impressed. The mechanics of the model are incredibly ingenious... easily one of the most clever designs I've seen yet.

Basically, it's a ball structure that, when you roll it, will spring out and transform into a robot as it does in the movie `The Phantom Menace'. The set it very durable... even withstood a couple of tumbles off the kitchen table without a single piece falling out of place. It also sprang open each and every time without a problem, never sticking or opening half way. One thing I appreciate is all the extra rubber bands included in the set... I can't imagine breaking them ALL and having to run around looking for replacements.

It also includes instructions for building an alternative AAT (Armored Assault Tank) from `The Phantom Menace'. This model, however, pales in comparison.

One thing that certainly impressed me was the value... I was stunned to find out that it was only half the price that I figured it was. Regardless of whether you're a Star Wars fan or not, this set is certainly a great idea for any Technics fan.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fun and unbelievable! A truely TECHNIC.   November 22, 2001

It will take you about 3 hours to build, then it's constant amazement! Even 1 hour after finishing I still can't believe it actually worked. Whoever designed this is a genius.

I am not going to go over what others said already. I do want to stress following instructions exactly, and often reference illustrations. Although the chain-reaction mechanism is fun, it does seem kind of fragile (especially since there is no glue). I did try to bend hard and drop from higher ground, and things seem to work ok with no damanges. Good thing is there are lots of extra rubberbands so if you break some you have spares.

Do have the expectation that it won't work all the time, at least not in my case.I assume adjusting the rubberband tension will help, I would have to play around with it.

There are some inconsistencies in the manual, nothing show stopper though. p31 the leg rubberband is attached to a different joing; p38 step 10 and 11 are reversed; p47 showed a non-existant rubberband which should have been on the other end. The rubberband location may be a preference issue because they work either way.

This lego technics set is beautifully engineered. It's fun to build, and to display, but the real beauty is in the rubber-band and impact-driven transformation.

The transform features a complex chain reaction. The rolling motion onto the protruding switch releases the forelegs. The extended forelegs absorb the same rolling impact, and this releases the hind leg, which in turn uncurls the body and releases the upper arms and head. The outflung upper arms then allow the lower arms to spring out.

This is only fun WHEN IT WORKS. There is a problem with the foreleg rubber bands needing to be in EXACTLY right configuration (each should dip UNDER the knob between the two connectors).

Also, making an "X" pattern out of the head's rubber bands seems to help.

LEGO STAR WARS ON MLN?
I think there should be Star Wars networkers on MLN! Especially Kit Fisto and Anakin![Y] What do you think?

CLONE H.Q.
I have made a Clone H.Q. because there is a Bounty Hunter H.Q. Now the clones don't need to share their battle plans with the bounty hunters. Here are some Jobs: 1st In Command: General Shock 2nd In Command: 3rd In Command: Head Pilot: Head Spy: Head Bomb Specialist: Head Strategist General: General: Commander: Commander: Spy: Bomb Specialist: Strategist: Strategist: Rocket Trooper: Trooper: Pilot: If your job isn't on here, tell me!

JEDI H.Q.
Well there is a bounty hunter H.Q. and Clone one too, so there probaly should be a jedi one too. All Jedi members are neutral and won't attack clones or bounty hunters(Although I can't see how you could do that) unless they implicate the fight. Just talk about Star Wars and go on Jedi Missions(The Council will assign you one) and have fun! May The Force Be With Us All!
